Blog 2 18.6.17

We spent this morning at the “Harewood” House Country Fair. This was held just a short distance south of Harrogate in Yorkshire where we have been staying for a week with Marg’s brother. The fare was remarkable, as there seemed to more activities for dogs that there was for children.
British Stickmakers' Guild
There was a whole row of exhibitors that were focused on the needs of dogs and across from them there were various doggie challenge courses. An interesting exhibition was of riding outfits through the last few hundred years focusing on clothing needed for fox hunting. In the main ring there was a man who managed to get a peregrine falcon to fly through the legs of the horse he was riding.
Our last blog finished when we were still in Corfu. We continued to explore the old town and swim every day and were lucky enough still be in the town when there was a celebration. We think it was a celebration of the Trinity.
The Band!!

On the Sunday evening everyone was dressed in their best and were out walking the streets. There were marching bands, open air church services and entertainment.

Prop Power @Athens Airport From Kerkrya to Dubrovnik!

Dubrovnik was more than we expected. Some of you will know the story of our trip to the then Yugoslavia in 1977 and how our car broke an engine mount on a bridge near Skopje that had not been repaired after an earthquake.
Dubrovnik Apartmnt Sunset

Not wanting to attempt to get it fixed in what was then a communist country we nursed the car up the Dalmatian coast. In those days the road down to Dubrovnik from the coastal highway was quite steep so we decided not to attempt it with an unreliable car.
Dubrovnik Aprtmtnt
This was our first trip back to this area since then and we were blown away by how different it looks. The place looked rebuilt with hardly any of the communist era houses still standing apart from the old town.
Our air bnb hosts met us at the airport and showed us where the beach, supermarket, way to walk to the old town all were. The apartment was up the equivalent of 5 flights but was really nice once we were up there. We had a sea view from the deck. All the 5 days we were there the weather was in the high 20 degrees or warmer so swims were again a big part of our stay with the beach at the bottom of cliffs another 5 stories down. Lovely clear warm water.
The old town did not disappoint.
Walk into old Dubrovnik

It has been reconstructed after the damage during the homeland war of the 1990s. We walked the fascinating streets and walls that are only 2 kilometres long.
Marg @ Old fountain - built in 1438
The old town is quite small. On every rocky outcrop there seems to be a café or bar. People were diving off the rocks just outside the walls to swim. There is a gondola ride above the old town and this gave us great views of the coast around the old town.
Strada or Placa via Pile and Ploče.
The only drawback was the number of tourists and this in not high season. There were 3 cruise ships in on the days we were in the old town.

2Km of Old city wall walk
On one of the days we escaped all this and went on a day trip by boat to visit the 3 Elafiti Islands the first of which is only half an hour from the new port. There were about 30 of us on the boat and we swam and walked on the first island, Lopud. The beach was sandy unlike the pebbles back on the mainland. Visited the captain’s house for a 5 course lunch on the second island, Sipan. The food was freshly caught mussels and mullet. It was a real family affair topped of with the captain singing and playing his piano accordion! We then went to the third island, Kolocep where we swam again and had the option of exploring a cave. As the entrance was underwater no one chose to do this.

Lupod Island

We have been in the UK for a week now and it is really great being with family and catching up with all their news. Our niece and her husband have moved to Harrogate since we were last here and we have been to see their new home.
Ehh Ooop its Yorkshire "the Strid"

It has been a week of setting up stuff for our stay and travels but apart from that we have been out for some great walks. Apart from the first couple of days the weather has been warm and dry.
Marg, Isobel, Helen, Colin
We walked in the Yorkshire Dales National Park near Bolton Priory along the river Wharfe.  We visited Nostell Priory and gardens south of Leeds where we had a good look at the old house and a walk around the grounds.

The house is unusual as it has much of the original furniture in it. There was also an exhibition of clocks. We have never seen so many clocks together.
One of Marg’s brother’s friends is a bee-keeper and he was giving a demonstration at the local Royal Horticultural garden, Harlow Carr.
A bee not in their bonnets
We all donned protective bee gear and watched as he took the hive apart and showed us where the baby queen bees were hatching.
Birds, bees and flowers
We watched while a couple of guard bees killed an intruder. Dramatic stuff. We then enjoyed the gardens and some amazing ice-creams from Harrogate’s iconic shop Betty’s.

Here we go again

Blog 3.6.17
We are sitting on the patio in the shade as it is too hot in the sun in the middle of the day. Sorry to all of you who are in winter.

Our terrace, Kerkrya

We have been at our air b’n’b in Corfu for a couple of days and we are enjoying this little part of Greek paradise. The flat is in the middle of the old town one block from the main square and quite close to a church with very loud and enthusiastic bells. The building has 3 flats and a house with white terraces decorated with pots of flowers. Tourists stop to take photos of it all the time so we are having to watch what we hang on the washing line. There is a pebbly beach 5 minutes away and the water is cold enough to be refreshing but warm enough to stay in for ages. The old town is now a UNESCO world heritage site and it is really interesting to explore. The food is another winner. We buy olives from huge tubs and feta scooped out of containers with liquid keeping it moist.
After dinner walk towards the port.

Katie dropped us at Wellington airport in the wet morning dark a couple of weeks ago. We then had a wonderful few days in Sydney staying with Colin’s sister Linda and Nick.  Their first grandchild has arrived since we last visited them so it was really special to meet our great niece Evie who is now a delightful 6 months old.

We flew Etihad airlines for the first time and it was fine. The 15 hours to Abu Dhabi was the usual pain but OK. We arrived around 5am and needed to get some local money from the ATM. Unfortunately the machine would not return our card or give us money. The banks were still closed and the foreign currency dealers are not allowed to issue local currency! Eventually we took a chance on another ATM with another card and this time got the cash we needed and our card back. We had a great couple of days staying in a lovely hotel that had its own private beach. The temps were in the high 30 degrees so we could not go out to swim between 9am and 4pm. Even sitting in the shade was only comfortable for about an hour.

Sarah met us at the airport in Berlin at the beginning of a great week of being part of her life. She had arranged with a friend to use her apartment as Sarah’s is too small. The building used to be the old cloisters for the Catholic church next door and the apartment was sunny and spacious.
Entry to the cloisters

When the church bells rung we had to stop talking. The suburb called Wedding was very multicultural and we felt that we passed the whole world by just walking a block down the Strasse. Sarah is rehearsing with the GOA Company to perform a work called “Exit to Endorphia”, a type of dance theatre, in July.

Cloisters and the BELLS!!
The group had been invited to perform some of this work at a festival in Gorblen, a town about 3 hours drive north of Berlin, on the Monday night we were there. So we attended the rehearsal for the festival show on the Saturday and found the process very intriguing. It was great to meet the dancers and choreographers.

The small group for the festival performance consisted of 5 dancers and a vocalist. They were from all over Europe, Denmark, Hungary, Greece and Germany. On the Monday we hired a car and drove to Gorblen, or near there at a little place called Marlin. This area was used to dump the nuclear waste from power-stations - the locals held big protests in the 1980s to stop this by chaining themselves to the railway tracks. They succeeded. The area now holds this big festival every year to focus on peace and love. It certainly had a Coromandel feel about it. The GOA performance was a great success. One of the scenes is a spoof on speed dating and was hilarious. We will return to Berlin in July to watch the whole performance.

One of the things Sarah had organised for us to do was a bike tour of Berlin. It was great although 4.5 hours biking in temps in the high 20s left us needing a little lie down at the end of the day. We had spent a couple of days in Berlin on the last trip but had not taken any tours so it was great to get all the history and explanations.

One of the most interesting things was a memorial to the Nazi book burning in the square where this happened. Humbolt University has built a library underground big enough to hold copies of all the books that were burnt.

Empty Library shelving under the plaza.
You view this empty library through a window in the pavement. Outside the university is an almost daily book sale of the titles which were burnt.

We head for Croatia on Tuesday to stay in Dubrovnik for 5 days and then fly to the UK.
